Feeling envious

Emotions, like almost everything else, exist on a spectrum. They vary from overwhelming, chest-thumping joy, to earth-shattering heartbreak. There are far more emotions than happiness and sadness and we experience them all. Not acknowledging them does not change anything except hinder your ability to deal with them in a healthy manner. It is impossible for you to only experience pleasant emotions, and unpleasant emotions are more than just sadness and heartbreak; envy is a valid emotion too. Feeling envious of others is not a sign of witchcraft or cruel intentions. It is a perfectly normal and healthy response to seeing others be abundantly blessed while your well runs dry and it is not due to a lack of effort on your part.

Envy is not only a green monster that overwhelms you to experience feelings of hatred towards your pretty sister with glass slippers and a Harry Windsor of her own. It can simply be a “why can’t I have things come easily for me like so and so…”. If you are close with someone, you could even tell them about your feelings of envy, not because you expect them to dim their light for you but because it will be far easier moving forward without allowing the darkness to consume you. And because you usually tell them about your current emotional state and this one is as valid as all the others.

Stigmatising envy creates the perfect environment for those feelings to fester and grow, thus causing people to act cruelly. This is where envy turns into jealousy and dark thoughts start to take root. This is where the witchcraft begins, and witchcraft is more than flying on a broomstick with a pointy hat, and a Hogwarts student card. Wishing ill upon others, and other acts of cruelty intended to make others suffer is participating in witchcraft with distinction.

Feeling a tinge of envy is normal and you should not feel ashamed for having a full range of emotions. Acknowledge it, accept it, and learn to live with it. Your only responsibility is to keep the darkness at bay.

  1. Love it! Definitely true and thanks for shedding some light on a topic so many people are ashamed to say out loud because of the fear that they'll be seen as though they don't wish you the best.
